What Is Behavior-based safety (BBS)
Behavior-based safety (BBS) is a systematic approach to workplace safety that focuses on identifying, observing, and modifying employee actions to prevent accidents and injuries. It operates on the principle that many incidents are the result of unsafe human behaviors, and by addressing these behaviors, a safer work environment can be created.
-
Teams, including employees and management, identify specific unsafe and safe behaviors related to their work. These are often based on past incident reports and risk assessments.
-
Trained observers, who are often peer employees, watch for these specific behaviors in the workplace. They use checklists to document both safe and unsafe actions without identifying individuals.
-
The observers provide immediate, constructive feedback. The focus is on positive reinforcement for safe behaviors, which is a cornerstone of the BBS approach.
-
The collected data is analyzed to identify trends and patterns. This information is then used to develop targeted interventions, such as changes in training, procedures, or equipment, to address the root causes of unsafe behaviors.
